Nikkor 28-80 f3.3- 5.6 G kit lens
Don’t Judge a Book by It’s Cover – a photographers tale
Many moons ago when I purchased my first DSLR (Nikon D70) it arrived in a bundle that included a Nikkor 28-80 f3.3- 5.6 G kit lens . The lens appeared to be constructed of 90% plastic (inc mount) weighed slightly more than a couple of feathers, it looked and felt like a typical nasty cheap kit lens and was summarily dispatched to the darker regions of my equipment cupboard never to see the light of day again.
Recently I was browsing Ken Rockwell’s site (he reviews mainly Nikon equipment) and came across , his list of Nikons top ten lenses. I scanned the list with interest, when I win the lottery which large piece of Nikon glass is heading my way. The 13mm f 5.6 looked interesting second hand about £4000, what about Nikkor 300mm F2.8 £4000 ish . Shock, horror, what was on his list, you guessed it the Nikkor 28-80 f3.3- 5.6 G
The 28-80mm G focuses more closely than other Nikon lenses, often eliminating the need for a macro lens. It autofocuses faster than any other Nikon AF lens, including the AF-S lenses. Just try one; it’s uncanny how instantly and exactly it focuses.
‘The 28-80mm G is sharper than the far more expensive 24-120mm VR
This lens isn’t quite as sharp as Nikon’s best, but pretty darn close. What gets it on my Best list is that they are this good at such a low price, and that they are tiny and weigh nothing for easy carrying
This lens incorporates every trick Nikon has learned over decades and decades of lens design and volume manufacturing. Using aspherical elements to improve performance and reduce size and weight’
Being a lens that was manufactured for film cameras it has no focal length adjustments on full frame cameras. With my D3 in hand the darker reaches of my equipment cupboard were accessed.
On Wednesday I had the opportunity to take a girl out for a photo shoot (she fancies being a model) With D3 and 28-80 f3.3- 5.6 G attached I headed for a location most of you will know.
How did this nasty piece of plastic perform ? Keep an eye on our Flickr Group
